New Teacher Academy Spins
Forward
Irving ISD's New Teacher Academy
brought out the current and future ATPE members. Not only did
educators join ATPE, they spun the prize wheel that included ATPE promo
items and gift cards that included restaurants, educational supplies,
and gasoline.

Campus Representatives
Soar
Irving Campus Representatives met
for their annual membership kickoff luncheon, but this year we soared to
the 26th floor in Las Colinas at the La Cima Club. President
Patrick Martin and Membership Chair Jeri Bailey stressed the importance
of being a campus rep and that Irving ATPE is so close to 2000 members
that the goal has been set. The success of any organization comes
from the "worker bees" and in the case of Irving ATPE, our worker bees
are the campus representatives.

ATPE Hosts Press
Conference
When Larry Comer from the state
office needed a venue for holding the DFW press conference on the survey
results, The Academy of Irving ISD was the choice. Jerry Bonham,
State ATPE President, presented the findings and fielded questions from
those in attendance, including media representatives from FOX 4, ABC 8,
and CBS 11.

A Message from the President
Patrick Martin, President,
Irving ATPE
Welcome back to a brand new academic
year! The 2008-2009 school year promises to be exciting as well as
demanding. As you work ever more diligently to ensure that the students
of Irving ISD receive the best possible educational instruction, your
leadership at the Irving ATPE Local is also engaged in determining how
we can better serve you.
As a result of some far ranging
discussion and some analyses of what the Irving ATPE Local should be, we
have concluded that our organization should have an optimistic view of
the future. We believe that as teachers, administrators,
paraprofessionals, and support staff, we must not only teach and mentor
those students placed in our charge, we must also serve as an example of
conduct and behavior. For these reasons, we have undertaken efforts to
make your Irving ATPE Local more community service oriented as well as
more representative of you.
In the following weeks and months,
we will be communicating with you about our plans to co-sponsor middle
school and high school Student Council activities as well as some
partnering activities with the City of Irving. We are also going to be
holding quarterly meetings to discuss the activities at ATPE State,
Regional and Local levels. We will be strongly encouraging your
attendance and participation.
Our immediate goal is our annual
recruiting drive. We are holding a “kick-off” meeting with all of our
Campus Representatives on August 7th. We will then be
participating in the New Teacher Orientation (August 14th and
15th) by providing snacks and drinks during the break
periods. While our new teachers are taking a break and enjoying
refreshments, we will be talking with them about the wonderful benefits
of ATPE membership.
And speaking of ATPE membership
advantages…Did you know that the insurance limits have been raised from
$6,000,000 to $8,000,000? Did you also know that membership will also
cover you with $2500.00 in Identity Theft protection? Folks, ATPE has
not been standing still. We are not only the largest association of
educators in Texas, we are the largest association of its kind in the
United States.
I am proud to be a teacher in Irving
ISD and I want you to know that I value the enthusiasm and
professionalism of my co-workers. As we move through this school year
together I hope to bring you timely news and inspired leadership. Once
again, welcome back!
