IRVING
BRADLEY HONORED
Helen Bradley, Nimitz
teacher and campus representative for Irving ATPE, was recently named as the
2008 Preserve America History Teacher of the Year for Texas.
Congratulations, Helen!
WHEELCHAIRS FOR MONGOLIA PROJECT
Irving ATPE will be
working with student organizations to raise funds for Irving Sister Cities
International project to provide wheelchairs for one of ISC's sister city:
Darkhan, UUL-Aimag, Mongolia. ISC's goal is to provide funds for 100 all
terrain wheelchairs by October. Each wheelchair costs $90 through the
Wheelchairs Foundation.
Irving ATPE
participated in this type of project once before by providing wheelchairs to
Leon, Mexico. If each campus would commit to a minimum of one wheelchair,
we would be providing at least one third of the goal.
Please send your
contributions to Gary Schepf, Irving ATPE Treasurer, at The Academy of Irving
ISD by September 30, 2008.

LEADERSHIP
U? A FIRST TIMER'S PERSPECTIVE
Susie LaVecchia, The Academy of Irving ISD
As I got into the car the question
raced through my mind, “Why did I agree to go to this conference when
I have so much to do at home?” My summer has been racing by,
measured only by jobs completed. Here I was, on my way to another
conference, and one that has "Leadership" in its title. What was I
thinking?
After 35 years of dedication in the
field of education, one would think I had experienced all the leadership
conferences I needed. Little did I know what I was in for over the next
three days. The first evening introduced me to the ATPE state president
from Mesquite, Texas and author Scott Friedman. A variety of workshops
kept many of us busy before dinner. The evening was left for us to
enjoy.
The remaining time at the conference
literally flew by! The speakers were truly dynamic and entertaining.
The workshops presented me with information that I will be able to use
as soon as I return to work. There was even time to get together with
those from my local unit and begin to organize our activities for the
upcoming year. With all of the events/workshops, we were provided the
most wonderful and creative snacks, breakfasts and box lunch. The
directions to all workshops were easy to follow and there was always a
friendly face to help you if those failed.
As a first timer to the Leader U, I
felt more appreciated for my attendance and interest than I have ever
felt at any conference. I was applauded at almost every workshop as a
first time attendee, as were we the first night at General Session. It
certainly made me feel that I was wanted and appreciated. My local unit
encouraged me to get in and become active, and it worked! I look
forward to working with the officers and members this coming year. I
plan on attending Leader U next summer and taking someone new with me!
IRVING RECOGNIZED
WITH GREEN APPLE AWARD
The stars glistened in Austin this summer as
Irving ATPE members attended Leader U and wore, for the first time, the
"Green Apple Award" ribbon, acknowledging the membership growth in
Irving to the 50-74% level of potential members.
In addition to
this honor, Donna Underwood of MacArthur High School and Susie
LaVecchia of The Academy of Irving ISD attended their first Leader U and
are ready to take on the world. Under the leadership of Irving
ATPE President Patrick Martin, the future of the local was planned and
set into action.
Stay tuned for a very busy year ...
